Aims

To identify potential complaints before they occur so that workable solutions may be planned and used to mitigate the impact.

Objectives

1. To examine common reasons why dental professionals fall foul of dental service regulators such as the GDC and CQC.

2. To examine ways of minimising risks of regulatory action.

3. To explore relevant guidance that the regulators will expect dentists and dental care professionals to know about and follow.

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Describe situations that can lead to patient complaints and fitness to practice proceedings.

2. Outline strategies for responding to complaints and concerns, so as to minimise escalation and reduce the risk of a regulator investigation.

3. Describe and summarise key issues relating to conduct, performance and ethics in everyday practice.
