DescriptionThe aim of this course is to develop the learners’ ability to recognise, assess and manage medical emergencies in the primary care dental setting (adults and paediatrics), so as to deal quickly with uncommon but potentially tragic events. This theory course meets the annual GDC requirements for CPD in medical emergencies and follows the UK Resuscitation Council guidelines in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Immediate Life Support (ILS).

• To provide training in how to perform an urgent care assessment of a sick patient
• To provide training in basic and immediate life support for medical emergencies in the primary care dental setting
• To outline the emergency drugs and equipment that should be held by dental surgeries, and their uses
• To explain the team approach to medical emergencies
• To outline procedures to minimise the risk of medical emergencies in the primary care dental setting.

This course is suitable for the entire practice team

Nicky Bartholomew RDN FHEA, GDC 108759 qualified as a Dental Nurse in 1983. Since then Nicky has worked in a variety of specialist settings including children’s dental services, special needs dental care, and in orthodontic practice. She has also worked in general practice, community dental services and at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham. Until recently Nicky was a Dental Care Professional Tutor at the University of Portsmouth Dental Academy, helping students to gain their qualifications in dentistry. She left to join a specialist orthodontic practice in Chichester. Nicky is an inspirational teacher and now lectures at postgraduate level across Wessex.
