DescriptionThe aim of this course is to increase GDP’s knowledge of periodontal therapy and management.
Additional informationObjectives:
• To provide training in the essentials of periodontal diagnosis, including examination of the periodontal tissues and radiographic periodontal assessment
• To explain modern concepts of non-surgical periodontal therapy
• To discuss periodontal treatment outcomes and recall maintenance programmes for patients
• To assess the requirement for specialised advice and discuss the selection criteria for referral
• To outline the multidisciplinary approach to comprehensive person-centred care when managing the care of patients with periodontal disease.

This course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Foundation Training by Equivalence. This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists are also invited to attend this essential one day course.

Richard Snoad BDS Dund MGDS RCS Edin FDS RCS Edin MSc Lond, GDC 54159 – Specialist in Periodontics, spent 10 years in general dental practice before joining the Royal Army Dental Corps, retiring from the Army in 2001 to become Head of Periodontics for ORA Dental Group, London. Since 2003, Richard has combined specialist practice with teaching and research. He is also a medico-legal expert in periodontology; professional panel member for the GDC’s Dental Complaints Service - private patients; editorial board member of Preventive Dentistry magazine and board member for the Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK).

Aims
  1. Evaluate the periodontal tissues and provide a differential diagnosis of the patient’s periodontal condition
  2. Assess the requirement for and provide, non-surgical periodontal treatment
  3. Evaluate the results of periodontal treatment so as to establish and monitor suitable recall maintenance programmes for patients
  4. Act on the basis of complexity assessment so as to refer patients appropriately
  5. Describe the role of dental care professionals (DCPs) in periodontal therapy, and work with them in the management of patients with periodontal disease
