DescriptionThis course is one of a number of courses designed to provide an introduction to NHS dentistry and is essential for dentists who are undertaking Dental Foundation Training by Equivalence (DFTQ). This course is also suitable for dentists who are new to the NHS and dentists returning to NHS practice. Other dentists are also invited to attend this training.

Aims

To prepare performers undertaking dental foundation training by equivalence and their educational supervisors for the training process. 

Objectives

1. To provide information and guidance on dental foundation training by equivalence, and a framework for organising the training.

2. To familiarise educational Supervisors and performers undertaking dental foundation training by equivalence with the Committee of Postgraduate Dental Deans and Directors (COPDEND) competency framework.

3. To discuss personal and professional development planning.

4. To provide training in best practice documentation and record-keeping, clinical audit and peer review.

5. To investigate how reflective practice can improve patient care. 

Learning outcomes

Following this course learners should be able to:

1. Explain the purpose of dental foundation training by equivalence, and outline the working pattern requirements for applicants and performers in training.  

2. Outline the competency requirements for dental foundation training by equivalence, as determined by COPDEND, and take responsibility for own learning. 

3. Identify current position together with immediate and future learning needs, and demonstrate recognition of the lifelong learning process.

4. Keep good up-to-date records, and use clinical audit and peer review to improve care for patients.

5. Use reflective learning models to maintain, develop and work within own professional knowledge and skills.
