This course is an overview of oral and maxillofacial trauma. It covers the common orofacial injuries and theoretical aspects of management and surgical options. There will be a hands-on plating, splinting and suturing session to experience the hardware used for open reduction and fixation and practice suturing and splinting.

Aims
  • To understand the basic principles of trauma management
  • To recognise different facial fractures and understand the management principles
  • To discuss the rationale, materials and methods for open reduction of facial fractures
  • To understand principles of management of facial lacerations
  • To understand the options available for restoring the mouth following trauma
Objectives

By the end of this course, delegates should:

  • Have an understanding of the principles of trauma management
  • Be able to recognise common signs and symptoms of facial fracture presentation
  • Know the theory underpinning treatment of facial fractures
  • Understand and practice suturing techniques for closure of facial lacerations
  • Have exposure to the hardware used in treating fractures with open reduction
  • Practice splinting teeth on models and suturing on foam pads
