Medical Emergencies for the Dental Team (CPD-MED21JAN17)

AvailabilityCourse was cancelled
SubjectMedical emergencies
DescriptionTHIS COURSE IS FOR UP TO 6 MEMBERS OF AN EXISTING DENTAL TEAM - SEE ADDITIONAL INFO FOR FULL DETAILS. Medical Emergencies in the dental setting are rare, but may occur at any time. Clarity on the standards of care required of members of the dental team faced with an acutely unwell person has been set out by the Resuscitation Council (UK) and endorsed by the General Dental Council (GDC). This document reflects the changing expectations of the public as well as those of healthcare professionals.

Aims

The aims of the training are to prepare the dental team for management of medical emergencies in the dental setting.

It is not always clear why a person is acutely unwell.  Accordingly, adopting a structured ABCDE approach is essential to the management of all patients. This helps to inform interventions as well as decision-making around if and how quickly external help is needed.

The Medical Emergencies Room in Leeds Dental Institute includes a mock dental surgery with a sophisticated manikin and audio-visual equipment.  This allows simulation of events central to the management of an acutely unwell patient to be undertaken in a safe environment where mistakes are a learning opportunity with no risk to patients.  The facilitators have extensive experience of management of acutely unwell patients in the NHS. There is a focus on a pragmatic approach and ensuring that the ABCDE approach is used appropriately.  This is combined with an emphasis on a team approach, safety issues and decision-making.

All members of the dental team are welcome including those who are not GDC registered. Ideally each training session should include team members who work with each other on a regular basis, but this is not essential. Some preparation is required prior to the training session and guidance will be given.

Objectives

A typical full-day session will be divided between aspects of the ABCDE approach, including CPR to Resuscitation Council (UK) guidelines, use of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED – for cardiac arrest) and simulation of medical emergencies using the high fidelity manikin. Several simulation scenarios are covered.  A structured debrief of each scenario includes review of videos recorded during the simulation allowing constructive analysis and identification of areas for development.  The review will include how the team worked together, safety issues and decision-making. The videos are personal to the group and are not retained.

Following your own preparation and the simulation session you should be able to:

  1. Effectively use the stepwise ABCDE approach.
  2. Translate knowledge and skills to simulated medical emergencies.
  3. Identify how the simulations translate to clinical practice including consideration of teamwork, safety and decision-making.
  4. Reflect on your current situation (critical self-awareness) and identify any need for further professional development or changes to systems in your workplace.
