DescriptionThis is an interactive course offering a detailed introduction to Makaton combining a practical approach with theory and technical information. The course has been specifically tailored to the needs of those working in the dental profession. There will also be a talk from a parent of a child who communicates using makaton discussing the experiences and challenges her and her daughter have faced in the medical and dental environment.

Makaton is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is the UK’s leading language programme for children and adults with learning or communication difficulties (The Makaton Charity- www.makaton.org)

Aims

To develop the communicaiton skills and confidence of those dental professionals who work with children and adults that communicate using makaton.

Objectives
  • To learn stage 1and 2 makaton core vocabulary
  • To learn makaton signs for words and phrases specific to the work of dental professionals
  • To develop confidence and understanding of the needs of those who communicate using makaton
